德国基民盟主席卡伦鲍尔表示，党内将於 4 月 25 日举行代表大会，并选出新任主席，其指目前 约有四名候选人角逐主席一职。当中，包括国会党团前任领袖默茨，市场估计一旦默茨当选，将 难以与默克尔共同合作。此外，执政联盟内的社会民主党亦表明，若默克尔被迫退任总理，将退 出执政联盟，最终或导致德国需要提前一年举行大选。
