新冠肺炎的Omicron變異株強襲英國，當地出現首宗死亡案例。官員警告，Omicron以「驚人」速度蔓延，估計再過兩天就會成為倫敦的主流病毒株。BBC News、Al Jazeera等報導，週一(13日)英相強森表示，至少有一名患者確認感染Omicron病逝。他強調：「以為(Omicron)是症狀較輕微的病毒，我認為應該放下此種想法，體認到病毒全速在人口間快速蔓延」。週日(12日)強森呼籲民眾施打第三劑疫苗，避免醫療體系癱瘓。他警告將有「海嘯」般的感染潮，就算完成兩劑接種者也難以倖免。研究顯示，只施打兩劑疫苗難以有效對抗Omicron，需要打第三劑才能讓保護力提高到70%以上。英國衛生大臣Sajid Javid接受Sky News訪問表示：「(Omicron)蔓延速度驚人，狀況前所未見，感染人數每兩三天就增加一倍」。目前倫敦染疫者當中，44%感染Omicron，預測未來48小時，Omicron就會取代Delta成為倫敦的新主流病毒株。
