據英國廣播公司（BBC）報導，在英國當地時間2022年10月20日13時30分，英國首相特拉斯在唐寧街10號首相府前發表講話，宣布辭去首相職務。特拉斯是查爾斯三世上任國王以來的第一位首相，是在英國正在面對能源危機，高通脹危機等經濟問題時上任的首相，她上任後就提出要以大幅度減稅和大規模舉債為核心內容的預算案；俗稱迷你預算案。
該預算案中其不合理的減稅計劃引起了金融市場的劇烈波動，英鎊匯率一度跌至過去37年來的最低點，更導致國債市場出現大幅波動，迫使英國央行英格蘭銀行緊急介入，宣告將購買長期國債，避免發生金融危機。因此特拉斯受到國內和國際的巨大政治壓力和批評，先被迫辭退財政大臣，後內政大臣也被迫下台。
財政大臣被迫下台後投資者對英國政府失去信心，英磅當日下跌1.2%兌美元報1.1188美元，英國10年期公債殖利率亦下挫至3.98％。但當特拉斯宣佈辭職後，英磅兌美元急升超20點，美股開市後更最高拉升約112點；英國10年期國債收益率更一度下跌超過10基點。
下任首相的人選在YouGov的一次民調報告中顯示，在530多名保守黨成員中有32% 希望約翰遜再次擔任首相，排在第二的是前財政大臣蘇納克，有23%的成員支持。
