為了嚴堵Omicron變異株，日本將要求密切接觸者不要居家隔離、而是要在檢疫設施隔離14天，且當前的「鎖國」措施將延長。另外，安倍政權期間所配送的「安倍口罩」庫存將在今年度內進行廢棄。綜合日本媒體報導，日本首相岸田文雄於21日晚間舉行的記者會上表示，關於Omicron確診者的密切接觸者，「將要求不要居家隔離、而是在檢疫所準備的設施進行14天的隔離措施」。目前日本Omicron密切接觸者中、大多選擇在家隔離。岸田文雄表示，將對所有的新增確診者進行基因定序、調查是否為Omicron，「藉由早期徹底檢測、強化防堵對策」。截至12月21日為止，日本Omicron確診者合計有85人，而截至21日0時為止，相關的密切接觸者超過4,000人、達4,284人。日本政府認為，目前發生的Omicron病例都是海外歸國的人士、或是其相關密切接觸者，因此不認為日本有Omicron的社區感染。
